Mammogram: What to Expect

The actual compression only lasts a few seconds per breast. Total time is ~15 mins.

You will feel pressure as the breast is flattened to get a clear image, but it's brief.

Preparation Instructions

  • No Deodorant or Powder

    Do not use deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion under your arms or on your breasts. They can appear as white spots on the X-ray.

  • Wear a Two-Piece Outfit

    You will need to undress from the waist up. Wearing a shirt and pants/skirt is more comfortable than a dress.

  • Schedule After Your Period

    For least discomfort, schedule the exam the week *after* your menstrual period, when breasts are least tender.
